MY READING - MAP

My reading map represents me nowadays thinking on the path and the place that literature has had during my life. This path is divided into two parts, the first one when I didn’t know reading but I enjoyed literature and the second one when I started school where I learnt to read and literature started to be boring for me. Now, we are going to discover what happened and take the positive and negative aspects that we can take into account in order to motivate the literature in children.

My first memories are about when I was not able to read. My mother and I used to be sat on a very comfortable sofa and she read me during hours. Some of the books that she read me were “The three little pigs”, “Little Red Riding hood”, “Cinderella” and “The Sleeping Beauty” but my favourite one was about a cat and its kitties, I loved It! And I also loved the way that she read me, she changed the tone of her voice and made a lot of gestures, sometimes I felt I was living it. I also remember that I learnt the books that my mother read me by memory and when I was alone I turned the pages while I was telling what was happening in each page despite I didn’t know reading because the pictures remembered me what happened in each moment.

The following memories are about when I was at school where I learnt to read. I didn’t like reading so much so from that moment I have only read the obligatory books that my teachers have ordered me in each course not only in school but also in high school. Therefore, in school I read books of the collection “Steamboat”; the best one for me was “Amalia, Amelia y Emilia”, I enjoyed with it; the collection “ Altamar” such as “Simón, Simón” or “Carlos Baza Calabaza”. In other way, some of the books that I remember from high school are an adaptation of “El Quijote”, “Around the world in 80 days” and “Rebeldes” for me this was the best one because I felt identified with the characters and I enjoyed reading it. The only books I have read on my own during this period of time were the collection “Los cinco” and some books of “Kika Superbruja”. Finally, in University I have read books about education such as “el valor de educar”.

In conclusion, following the path of my reading map first the characters of the stories were animals and the princesses and princes that appeared in the videos I saw and the way my mother read made me lived it.  Then, the books that I remember are those that their characters and situations introduced me in the adventures that they lived. Therefore, I can claim that to motivate children to be interested in literature, we have to give them books adapted to their ages and we have also take into account the importance of change the tone of voice, make gestures, use images, characters and situations that makes the children to be identified and involve them. Literature teaches a lot of things and should be shown in different ways not only reading it but also singing, dancing, watching videos and through storytelling among others.

Now, I would like to know about you!

What do you think about the role that literature have had during my life? Have you felt identified with any situation, book etc.?

What do you think about the things that I have suggested you in order to motivate children to be interested in literate? Do you think that there are more things that we should take into account?

  1. Hi Clara!

Your reading map shows us how your reading life has been in four stages. I really feel identified with your first reading stage. In your case, your mum used to read and performance different stories, in my case my grandfather used to change his voice depending on the characters! haha
As you said in your post, literature can be used as an educational tool. I agree with you! What is more, literature is not only about reading. Literature implies much more ( our perfomance, for example). Moreover, you said you had compulsory readings... Sometimes soooo boring!:( What about "Amalia, Amelia, Emilia" or "Altamar"? I mean, what is the topic in those books?

Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts with us :)

  4. Hello Clara!
What a good idea to show us your Reading map picture and description in your blog! I have to admit that I feel very identified with you.

My mother also told me stories during hours, she was my best storyteller. What I also loved is how easily she changed her voice. However, I do not know all the children books you mention because my favorite ones where about Barrio Sesamo and Babar, do you know them?
During my Primary Education period, I experimented the same than you. I think that we do not like to read because we had to read alone and that was not so funny! Moreover, I completely agree with you school compulsory books were not really interesting. I also had to read almost the full collection of Barco de Vapor. Once, I started High School I also read classic literature. One more time, I think the same than you! I loved them  In addition, in the last part of my reading map you could also appreciate children literature and educational books. However, I am also interested in other type of books, such as Cuentos para pensar by Jorge Bucay or El Alquimista by Paulo Coelho. I recommend you to read them! They help you to reflect about many daily aspects.

Finally, I would like to add that it sad that we did not enjoy, at all, reading during these important ages. However, now as future teachers we should prevent it! As you mentioned at the end of your post, it is really important to read child’s literature. We should know their place of interest and try to explore it in a deeper way.

Thank you for sharing with us your personal experience 

  5. I am very happy with your comments! Thank you for sharing your personal experience too.

Rebeca, "Amalia, Amelia y Emilia" is a book of the collection Barco de Vapor, I can´t remember so many things about the story but when I was writing my reading map I remembered the title of this book and I remember that I enjoyed with it that is why I have represented it in that way, I just felt it!. On the other hand, Ultramar is a collection similar to Barco de Vapor, but I didn´t like very much the books that I read of this collection, so I can´t tell you so many things about it.

Carla, thank you for your recommendation!, I have alredy started to read "El alquimista" because other partners recommended me it before and I will buy "Cuentos para recordar", I am sure it will be very useful for me because we are finishing our degree and I feel a little bit scared and lost, I need to reflect and think in many aspects of my life and what I want to do in the future. Regarding to Barrio Sesamo´s and Babar´s books I didn´t know them but I will look for them and I will read them I am sure I will like them too.

I will continue sharing things with you, thank you very much again,

    Clara.

  6. Clara,
It is very nice to see the path you have followed during your life. I hope that you recently have discovered new books, which had made you feel attracted to literature again.

I agree with Carla. You definitely should read “Cuentos para pensar” by Jorge Bucay. I’m happy to hear that you liked the “Alquimista”. It has become one of my favorite books. It is a book that, in a first look, seems very simple and for children but, if you read it quietly and calmly, it makes you reflect and find a lot of amazing and important things inside yourself. I absolutely recommend it to everybody!

I enjoyed how you describe the scene of your mum readying to you. I feel very identify. One of the things that I like the most about my parents is that they have plenty of imagination. They use, even nowadays, every single moment to turn it magical; and they have developed in me a huge creativity, which I use it to create, write and perform fantastic creatures or stories.
I love the feeling that the sentence “Everything can happen” transmits to me. I think that we, as future teacher, should transmit this to children. Literature can develop in them this same feeling. It is our responsibility to choose proper books for our students, allow them to change the end of the stories, encourage them to transform the book in a performance, to work with the body language, to show them the importance of changing the tone of voice to each moment and character, as you have perfectly explained in your post. I love readying and I would love to transmit this passion to my students.
    Leti.
